mobiBLU’s newest player is shaped like a UFO

Okay, we agree that manufacturers these days have to experiment with the design of their MP3 players to make sure it gets noticed (and bought eventually). When confronted by mobiBLU’s A10 UFO, we were clueless what exactly the designers had in mind. This is a portable media player but even though it is hard to make out by the photos, it looks anything but portable. We are definitely not going to be seen with one of these hanging around our necks.

As the name suggests, this media player represents a UFO and will be available in two colours, glossy red and glossy black. You do get support for Bluetooth, built-in speakers and battery, a headphone jack and 2/4/8 GB storage. But there is no screen and the battery life won’t find many takers at 15 hours with headphones and 6 hours with the speakers. The power & basic music controls are located on the top. No word on the pricing or availability yet.

DIY Computer Monitor LED Backlight

Thanks to Astia for sending in this LED backlight project, I think this is the perfect way to add a festive touch to your computer system.

“The whole project consists of architectural strip RGB controlled LED’s … After several meters of the strip LED’s were received as a gift, along with a 12v DC power supply, a colour changing solution was needed to control the strip. After some dabbling to figure out how the circuit on the strip was laid out, it was off to Jaycar electronics for bits and pieces… The strip itself is wired so the three colours (red, green and blue) share a common positive off the power supply, and the negative split across the three. The voltage that is applied to the negative controls how bright that particular LED will be, hence the colour mixing. And thus, a controller box was designed and built. The box consists of three toggle switches, which control each colour, or more specifically, the negative to each LED. As a result, colour mixing can be achieved by flicking combinations of various switches. The next thought was the practical application of the strips. During the testing phase, a strip of 8 LED’s had been stuck to the underside of an LCD monitor, thanks to the adhesive backing, to achieve a neon glow affect. This ended up being the final use, but with several meters of strip lighting the result was significantly more spectacular.”

Nikkai In-Car Journey Recorder for taping the Road Ahead

When I was on the road to Vegas for CES, I wished I had some sort of video recorder so I could just speak my mind and write about it later. It would have definitely saved me some time and would have made the trip a lot less boring. On a somewhat related note, Nikkai has created the In Car Journey Recorder, which is the inverse of my idea.

Yes, the In-Car Journey Recorder is designed to affix to the windshield to record the road ahead, not the driver. It uses a 1.3M CMOS image sensor, which can record video footage for your insurance or lawyer in case of an accident. Now you have proof that it really wasn’t your fault in a collision case, when it’s your word against someone else.

The In-Car Journey Recorder records to an SD card for up to 2GB capacity, which is good for up to 18 hours worth of video footage. It can capture intervals between 2-3 seconds and 3 minutes.

As for power, it is powered by two AAA batteries for four hours of continuous use. It is also capable of being powered by a DC 12V charger. You should be able to purchase the Nikkai In-Car SD Journey Recorder at the Maplin site for about £39.99.

Everyone has a fond memory of the old Polaroid cameras, there was nothing more rewarding that loading up the old cartridges and taking a shot, before the photographic paper would emerge from the slot and waiting for your picture to develop itself right before your eyes (or if you shook it too much waiting to see the streaky mess you had made).

Now a new camera from Tomy Xiao allows you to get quickly printed pictures in an instant (60 secs), the built in Zink printer creates a 3 x 2 inch borderless image, which would be ideal for people travelling who want to be able to give a hard copy of a photo to someone they meet on their way. Unfortunately the colourful 5 Mega Pixel cameras are only available in Japan at the minute, but if demand is high enough expect to see them in your local retailers pretty soon.
